The Roman Legion is the name of the army in the Roman Empire in the 1st century. A famous core unit in the Roman Legion was made up of armored infantrymen who were also known as legionaries. These were trained professional soldiers equipped with helmets, heavy armor and shields, and with spears and swords as their weapons. Only Roman citizens could become a legionary. Each legion was always accompanied by auxiliary units recruited from the empire's colonies. Soldiers of these units provided cavalry, scout troops, archers and skirmisher to support the legion's heavy infantry.
